A note on the systematic position of the Bathynellacea (Crustacea, Malacostraca) using molecular evidence Naturalis
Camacho, Ana Isabel; Rey, Isabel; Dorda, Beatriz A.; Machordom, Annie; Valdecasas, Antonio G..
Molecular data for the mt 16S rDNA gene fragment of a bathynellacean is here presented for the first time and used to analyze the relationship of the group within the crustacean class Malacostraca (Arthropoda, Bathynellacea). Two contrasting views have classified the bathynelids as being cither within the order Syncarida or in a separate super-order Podophallocarida belonging to the infra-class Eonomostraca, a disagreement based mainly on debates over external and internal morphology. The preliminary analyses offered here in question the placement of this Bathynellacea within the Syncarida, and suggest the need for a further study of relationships among the malacostracan groups.

A review of the known hosts geographical range and current diagnostic procedures for the virus diseases of cultured penaeid shrimp ArchiMer
Lightner, D; Bell, T; Redman, R.
At least six virus diseases are presently known in cultured penaeid shrimp. Each of these six penaeid virus diseases (BP = Baculovirus penaei ; MBV = Penaeus monodon -type baculovirus (including PBV of Australian penaeids); BMN = baculoviral midgut gland necrosis; HPV = hepatopancreatic parvo-like virus; IHHNV = infectious hypodermal and hematopoietic necrosis virus; and REO = reo-like virus of the hepatopancreas) may be comprised by a multitude of individual strains, some of which are highly pathogenic to some penaeids, while being of little importance to others.

Chevreux ArchiMer
Bellan-santini, D; Dauvin, J.
In the world, the Ampelisca genus is constituted by more than 140 species, which are found between 0 to 4000 m depth. Phylogeny, biology and ecology are the most important interest in this genus. The present analysis of new and older collections (E. Chevreux) have permitted to describe 11 new species. 41 species are listed in the north-eastern Atlantic fauna. These are different arguments to think that Ampelisca groups was actually in speciation. Two groups issued from a phenetic analysis are discriminated by their apomorphic levels. More than of the third are endemic species. 21 species are present only in one of the five biogeographic region. 23 species are limited to the continental shelf, 34 live up to the first 1000 meters and 4 are bathyal. 2 species...

Pequeux, A; Lignon, J.
This paper deals mostly with recent physiological data on ion transport across the gill tissue and an attempt is made to correlate them with blood osmoregulation and ecological distribution in euryhaline decapods. A particular attention is paid to the gills of the fully euryhaline Chinese crab Eriocheir sinensis . Supporting this ecophysiological approach, there is an important ultrastructural analysis of the gill epithelium under various salinity conditions. The possible part played by the cuticle in ions movements is also considered.

Thorez, A; Compere, P; Goffinet, G.
Ultrastructural observations of various integumental regions of the crab Carcinus maenas show an important biodegradation of the old sclerites during premolt. At the ecdysis, this biodegradation extends from the basis of the membranous layer up the upper third of the principal layer. The first biodegradation features are a disorganization followed by a complete disappearance of the microfibrils. Numerous ecdysial droplets and double membrane bounded microstructures probably take part in biodegradation processes.

Charfi, C.
Electrophoregrams of proteins on polyacrylamid gel concentrated at 2.5 - 15% made it possible to separate 24 protein fractions in polytypic Idotea chelipes species, 4 of which having a higher activity and corresponding to hemocyanin. A clear resemblance is evident in proteinograms of various sub-species and in I. chelipes populations whereas those of I. b. basteri seem to be quite different. A variation also exists between sexes within the same population. It corresponds to the slowest fraction whose activity is more intense with females.

Truchot, J; Jouve, D.
Oxygen consumption of juvenile prawns, Penaeus japonicus , was measured during the day at 4 temperatures (23, 26, 30 and 33 degree C) and at various oxygenation levels. For inactive prawns burrowed into sand, respiratory metabolism was maintained almost constant in hypoxia above a critical oxygen pressure of about 30-40 Torr. Data analysis according to a hyperbolic model indicates that the capacity for metabolic regulation was optimal between 26 and 30 degree C. Prawns acclimated 1-2 weeks at 20 degree C in moderate hypoxia (P sub(O2) around 50-55 Torr) showed a reinforced regulation of oxygen consumption when compared to normoxic controls.

Crustacean biodiversity through the marine fossil record Naturalis
Sepkoski Jr., J. John.
Approximately 2,600 genera of marine crustaceans have been recognized in the fossil record, and crustaceans constitute the major component of marine arthropod diversity from the mid-Paleozoic to the Recent. Despite problems of sporadic fossil preservation and/or taxonomic ambiguity, some general statements can be made about the history of crustacean biodiversity, based on global taxonomic data bases. Ostracodes were the first major group to radiate, attaining high diversity during the Ordovician Period with other members of the Paleozoic evolutionary fauna; rates of extinction and responses to mass extinctions were also similar to those of groups within the Paleozoic fauna. Malacostracans and barnacles (cirripedes), the two other crustacean groups with...

Developpement embryonnaire de Palaemon serratus : Resultats preliminaires ArchiMer
Bellon, H.
The formation of the limbs, the digestive tract, the nervous system, the sensory and hormonal structures begins in this prawn during the embryonic stage C, according to Richard's definition (1974) and is performed at the stage H. The digestive tract differentiates with a caudo-cephalic gradient. The digestive gland is formed at least partially by vitellophages. The C.N.S. appears with a cephalo-caudal gradient and the regions of the eyestalk are quickly differentiated. The organ of Bellonci and the sensory pore appear independently during the stage F. The first neurosecretory cells are detected in the brain during the stage D.

Goudeau, M; Lachaise, F; Kubisz, P; Goudeau, H.
Electrophysiological measurements and related cytological controls were done on immature and submature oocytes of Homarus gammarus . By chromatography (HPLC) and radio-immunoassays (RIA) it was established that submature oocytes displayed different ecdysteroids. Furthermore, the structure of the stalk (funiculus) for the laid eggs attachment was analyzed. it consisted of the two superimposed vitelline envelopes which were likely modified by the cortical reaction exudate during the fertilization process. In addition, the successive secretory phases, regarding to the embryonic envelopes were evidenced. Finally, the ecdysteroid titers of embryonic stages were measured.

Enrichment of live foods. ArchiMer
Watanabe, T.
Live foods such rotifers and Artemia are still indispensable for mass propagation of larval fish. At present, more than 20 fish and crustacean species are mass produced in Japanese governmental fish farming centres and private hatcheries. Fry are either released into the coastal areas or used for commercial cultivation. This culture technology is rapidly developing with new species being introduced each year and larval rearing is increasingly identified as the number one constraint. Artemia is used most extensively, particularly for the mass production of Kuruma prawn, Penaeus japonicus .

Sohier, L; Bianchi, M.
The quantitative and qualitative evolution of the heterotrophic bacterial community of sea water was studied throughout an experimental rearing of Penaeus japonicus in closed systems. Cluster analysis was realised on 417 strains coming from water sampled at different moments of the experiment. This collection includes 40 strains coming from a mussel used for diet and 40 strains coming from the digestive tract of one prawn after six months rearing. Quantitative and qualitative studies have both shown a similar evolution of heterotrophic microflora whatever the initial animal load was. The dendrogram obtained led to a description of characteristics of the various populations constituting the heterotrophic bacterial community of the water environment...

First record of a settled stomatopod Platysquilla eusebia in the North Sea (Malacostraca: Stomatopoda) Naturalis
Lewis, W.; Gittenberger, A..
This paper describes the discovery of a settled juvenile specimen of the stomatopod Platysquilla eusebia on the Dutch part of the Dogger Bank in the central North Sea. This is the northernmost record in Europe. The species is native to the Mediterranean and to the Atlantic coast from Portugal up to France. Further investigations have to show if the species already forms populations this far north. As the planktonic stages of P. eusebia have already been recorded in prior years, the establishment of the species should not be a problem, providing the circumstances are favourable.

Intersexuality in the porcellanid crab Pisidia longicornis (Crustacea: Decapoda: Anomura: Porcellanidae) Rev. Bras. Zool.
Ferreira,Luciane Augusto de Azevedo.
Intersex specimens of Pisidia longicornis (Linnaeus, 1767) are recorded for the first time and their secondary sexual characters are analyzed. Of 145 specimens of P. longicornis examined in this study, six were identified as intersex individuals. Of these, three presented male secondary sexual characters, well-developed male gonopores and rudimentary female gonopores, whereas the other three had female secondary sexual characters, with female gonopores being more pronounced than the male ones. The present study provides the first record of intersex porcelain crabs.

Jugan, P; Vanherp, F.
After solubilization of ovocyte-membranes from the crayfish Orconectes limosus , a component with a molecular weight of 30 kDa and capable to fix vitellogenin specifically, could be characterized by SDS-PAGE and by electroblotting. Because this isolated component is sensible to the digestion of proteolytic enzymes such as pronase, it is assumed that it is a protein. A polyclonal antiserum is produced against this component and its tissue-specificity is verified by ELISA.
